Tips & Tricks: How to Tighten Loose Shutter Louvers

Shutters should hold steady wherever you tilt them, but if your louvers start falling back down or won’t stay where you set them, that’s a clear sign they need a quick tightening.

Luckily, it’s an easy fix you can do yourself with just a Phillips screwdriver.

Here’s how 👇

Step 1 – Find the Tension Screws

Open your shutter panel and look along the inside, near the frame side of the panel. You’ll see small holes, these are where the tension screws live.

  • For standard shutters (not split tilt): Target the middle hole in the panel. That one adjusts the whole section.

  • For split-tilt shutters: You’ll adjust each half separately.

    • For the bottom half, find the hole in the middle of the bottom section (lined up with a louver).

    • For the top half, find the middle hole in the top section.

Step 2 – Insert the Screwdriver

Slide a Phillips screwdriver into the correct hole until you feel it grab onto the tension screw.

Step 3 – Adjust the Tightness

  • If your louvers are too loose and won’t stay put → tighten the screw.

  • If your louvers are too stiff and hard to move → loosen the screw.

While adjusting, use your other hand to lightly hold the louver that lines up with the screw. Test as you go until the louvers feel smooth but secure.

Step 4 – Test & Enjoy

Once tightened, your louvers should stay in place exactly where you set them, no more drooping or falling back down.
