Tips & Tricks: How to Keep Your Shutters in Top Shape - Pull Bar Addition

Shutters are an investment in your home’s look and feel. But like anything, the way you use them can make or break their life span. A couple of small habits can save you from staples popping out, tilt bars loosening, repair calls down the road, and longevity through proper care.

Here’s what you need to know 👇

Tip #1 – Don’t Use the Tilt Bar to Open & Close

If you’ve got shutters with a traditional tilt bar running down the middle, remember: the tilt bar is for looks, not for function.

When you want to open or close your louvers, don’t grab the tilt bar and pull. Instead, place your hand directly on the louver itself and open or close from there.

Why? Because using the tilt bar to do all the work puts stress on the tiny staples that connect it to the louvers. Over time, they loosen, fall out, and suddenly you’ve got shutters with an unattached hanging pull bar in the middle.

Now before you close them make sure to check for tip #2

Tip #2 – Watch Out for a Crooked Tilt Bar

Sometimes you’ll notice your tilt bar swings slightly to the left or right. If you try to close the louvers while it’s crooked, those same staples take all the strain, and that’s when they start failing.

Instead, before closing the louvers, straighten the tilt bar so it’s aligned, then close everything smoothly. That one second of adjustment will protect your shutters for years.

What if Something Does Break?

Even if you follow these tips, accidents happen. Staples can still come loose, or tilt bars can shift over time. If that happens:
